Pink Diamonds

One of the Rarest and Most Valuable Colours of Diamond*

Natural fancy coloured diamonds are very rare and expensive. Pink is one of the rarest and most desirable colours. The Darya-i-Nur diamond is the largest pink diamond in the world at about 185 carats.

Natural or Enhanced?

Natural pink diamonds are so rare that most jewellers have never seen one, and will never own one. In recent years, treatment processes have been developed to alter the colour of some diamonds. Most of the pink diamonds we have bought are natural, although we also happy to offer enhanced or treated pink diamonds. Any diamonds shown on this site will be natural unless otherwise marked.

How Rare?

In our first twenty years of designing diamond rings, we had only owned 5 coloured diamonds, four of which were certificated as natural. Among the largest diamonds in the world only 1 out of the top 66 is pink, although there are a number of other famous pink diamonds. In recent years the Argyle mine in Australia has produced a relatively large number of fancy coloured diamonds including pink ones. Surprisingly, the increased availability of pink diamonds has increased the interest and demand for pink diamonds. Argyle now produces about 90% of the total world supply of pink diamonds.

How Expensive?

Quality for quality, fancy pink diamonds are more expensive than ordinary near-colourless ones. We have seen astronomical prices quoted for pink diamonds, but we manage to source small numbers at reasonable prices. Most pink diamonds, even enhanced ones, are more expensive than white ones of similar quality. Natural pinks are more valuable than enhanced, deep intense colours are generally more expensive than pale pinks. There are obviously many different varieties of pink, the "nicest" pinks are the most desirable and most expensive.

How Many
We believe that we have more pink diamonds in stock than anybody else in the UK. We recently bought two batches of natural pinks totalling over 120 carats , and have seen the world production quoted as between 50 to 60 carats per annum. As it happens, most of the parcels we bought are very small, but our guess is that we have over 5,000 natural pink diamonds in stock.

What About Rubies or Pink Sapphires?

Why bother to get so excited about pink diamonds, when we could use rubies or pink sapphires instead? The very best sapphires are quite expensive, and they still do not have the sparkle that pink diamonds possess. In addition even though sapphires are very hard and durable, diamonds are many times harder and even more durable.

Rings

We design and create diamond rings, and we have found that many other people share our love of pink diamonds and other fancy colours. So far we have only made a small number of rings using pink diamonds, but we are busy right now with a few new ones. The problem seems to be that we sell them as fast as we can find the diamonds, and make the rings.

Pendants & Ear-Rings

We have also made a few pendants, and are about to produce our first pair of pink diamond ear-rings. Because of the variation in colours, and the small numbers of pink diamonds we get to see, it is not easy to find matching pairs of pink diamonds for ear-rings. Watch this space.
